Why: This 30-hour course is the first requirement to becoming a NYS Certified Addiction Recovery Coach / Certified Recovery Peer Advocate. This training offers an alternative approach to helping someone who is seeking recovery, in early recovery, or a friend/family member of someone in recovery gain knowledge and skills necessary to guide and mentor others through their own recovery process. It can help someone heal from the devastating effects of addiction and help deepen and support their recovery. Studies have shown that people do not recover in treatment but that they recover in their communities. This training can be a community tool to help those addicted to have sustainable recovery.

This curriculum will cover the following topics:

1. Components and guiding principles of Recovery
2. Roles and functions of a Recovery Coach vs. Sponsorship/Addiction Counselor
3. Stigma and labels associated with Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
4. Stages of Recovery
5. Multiple Pathways of Recovery
6. Culture and Cultural Competence
